Description
Do you have a story you’ve been meaning to revise and get out into the world? This four-week online course, intended for intermediate to advanced fiction writers who are seeking their first publications, focuses on that last ten percent of short story writing: revision and submission. Participants arrive with one short story they’ve already workshopped, plus any workshop comments and revisions they’ve made since.
Over the first three weeks of the class we workshop the draft alongside any comments it garnered, working toward a final, submission-worthy version and a one-on-one meeting with the instructor. The final week of class focuses on finding venues and preparing the story for submission. The focus here will be on learning how to “read” workshop comments and how to become your own best editor to the point that you know when a story is ready to send out. Participants will also get a primer on how to pinpoint the right venues for their work and best practices for writing cover letters, tracking submissions, and formatting a story for journal submission. This is a highly collaborative course that relies on trust between its participants, as they will be sharing not only their own creative work but the comments, or a reflection on the comments, they’ve received in workshops. Participants will leave the course having a finished story in-hand and a plan for where to send it, and may even make their first submissions during our final session “submission party.”
Course Plan:
Week 1: Reacting to readings about revision Workshop several stories
Weeks 2 and 3: Workshop sessions Readings
Week 4: Individual Zoom conferences & manuscript review with instructor Submission week/submission party (plus any remaining final workshops)
