Description

The Hallmark holiday movie has a reputation of being simple and deeply formulaic. And to some degree, yes. However, the craft of writing a holiday movie that feels good and satisfies is deceptively tricky. In this class, we’ll ask how to make something enormously complicated look easy. We’ll explore how to shape romance for the screen, and how to create holiday joy in the form of a movie—the kind that rivals an audience’s fondest childhood memories. Led by screen and TV writer Zac Hug, discussion and exercises will use students’ own holiday experiences and idealize them for a scripted audience, cover the ins and outs of a 9-act structure, and perhaps even include a family eggnog recipe that absolutely slaps.
