Description
What makes a trustworthy voice? Who are some poets who have written in another voice but still given that voice agency and earnestness? We are always told “write what you know” or “write from your experiences.”
This class will look at the work of poets who have written in persona or written about history and how they were able to make the speaker of those poems one a reader can trust, grow and learn from. We will look at project poems from Patricia Smith, Tyheimba Jess, Natasha Trethewey and Ilya Kaminsky.
This class will encourage everyone to bring in their own project based poems for critique and feedback. Whether that’s a research project, familial histories or documentary poetics, all is welcome as we explore using our writing to bring to life voices outside of our own.
We are able to offer a limited amount of both 50% scholarships for our multi-week classes and 100% scholarships for our single-session classes on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students may receive one scholarship per term. Click here to apply for a scholarship spot.
