Description

Artists of other disciplines have practices to help them hone their skills and develop their craft that are disconnected from a final product. Singers practice scales. Dancers do barre exercises. Actors learn monologues. In all of these cases, the point of the exercise is to grow their understanding and knowledge in order to create their art, rather than creating something for public consumption.

Writers are almost always working toward a product, though, focusing on how to make what they’re writing ready for an audience. But in order for writers to be successful, they need to be able to practice their skills in a pressure-free environment.

In this class, we’ll move away from product and focus on practice, allowing writers to play and experiment. Students will practice elements of writing, like crafting snappy dialogue or engaging descriptions, and talk about ways to build a writing practice into their lives. Students in this class will walk away with ideas for how to develop a writing practice that meets their needs and with a better sense of how they can incorporate writing into their daily life.
