CLASS INFO

Crime fiction is a wide-ranging and enormously versatile genre. It can entertain and fascinate, keep readers guessing and turning the pages. By probing the depths of human depravity and destruction, it can also reveal and reckon with difficult truths, the fissures in societies and communities and families that lead to interpersonal violence. A lot of this is intuitive––we understand history and current events through stories of crime on both large (genocide, slavery) and small (individual instances of hate crime, sexual assault, or murder) scales.

In this PJ seminar, we will talk about this capacity in crime fiction, the way violence exposes everything around it––the power structures, permissions, resentments, prejudices, and injustices that lead people to hurt each other. We will also talk about how we can look at the world around us and use its flaws to inform the lives of our characters and generate fiction with the power of truth.
