What makes a query letter inviting, intriguing, and undeniable? Writers who know their novels inside and out often struggle to articulate what is special about their stories. A great novel description can make or break a query letter, but they’re utterly mysterious to many.
In this one-night course, Blair Hurley will work with you to articulate what is bold, vital, and unforgettable about your story. We’ll examine what makes a query letter polished and professional, as well as the dos and do nots of pitching. We’ll do in-class exercises to dig deeper into the problems and questions that your novels explore, and cover the essential components of a professional query, as well as what aspects of story and character can entice a potential reader of your manuscript.
Please bring a draft query letter to class. We’ll examine successful pitches, and discuss how to apply winning strategies to your project’s unique personality and voice. We’ll do exercises in “getting to know your novel” and talking comfortably about your novel’s appeal, so that you’re prepared for that unexpected agent chat in the elevator.
