During the 20 years before
Cynthia Newberry Martin’s first novel, Tidal Flats
, was published, she served as the Review Editor for Contrary Magazine,
was the Writing Life Editor for Hunger Mountain
, started her website Catching Days, which features the How We Spend Our Days series, over a decade of essays by writers on their lives, and became a founding board member of the literary nonprofit Writing by Writers. Even with all this good stuff, she hit a low spot in 2014, feeling as if she were nothing but a writer who had not published a book. She knew that wasn’t true and committed to a yearlong project where she wrote one true thing about herself each day. By the end of the year, she had relearned that not only was she so much more than no book; she was also so much more than a writer.
