Writing Retreats with StoryStudio
Put your responsibilities on hold for a while as you join us on one of our many writing retreats. We’re pleased to once again partner with Ragdale, as well as various other organizations, to provide time, space, and inspiration for your writing. Our instructors and locations will change year to year, and we’re excited to continue to grow our offerings.
For over 100 years, Ragdale has provided the time and space for artists and writers to delve deeply into creative endeavors, and today it has a tangible energy that feeds your work from the moment you arrive.
“One of the unique features of Ragdale is its unbroken continuity as a center for art and creativity. It has been, without interruption, the home of artists.”– Arthur Miller, in the Introduction to Ragdale: A History and Guide by Alice Hayes and Susan Moon.
Located in Lake Forest, Illinois, Ragdale has a spectacular setting that offers the best of nature and architecture. See below for open dates.

Since its inception at the beginning of this century, the Hotel on Washington Island has been a place to rest, join others, delight in a meal, and attend a workshop. The owner, Jeannie Kokes, says “the mission is to care for the island community, guests and planet, expand our sustainable practices, source and exist responsibly.”
Located in northern Wisconsin, Washington Island is only accessible by ferry. Their menus are seasonal; sourced and inspired by the local farmers and growers they love, made from scratch in their kitchen.
StoryStudio is delighted to partner up with Washington Island for a long-weekend retreat on the island. We hope that you enjoy the charm of the historic hotel and find inspiration and motivation during your stay.

RENEW, REFRESH, REVISIT with Juan Martinez
The goal of this workshop is to refresh our practice. It’s easy to fall into a rut, to think we’re only capable of working in certain modes, and it’s not true. We can do a lot more. We’ll work through a series of exercises to generate material drawn from two seemingly disparate sources: (1) the fantastical and (2) our own lives. Expect to generate a lot of material but also expect to have a lot of fun. We’ll come out with fresh stories as well as new approaches to our creative output, and we’ll find constructive and supportive ways to sustain ourselves and our literary community. Writing can be hard, it can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be—not all the time, at least—and there is real joy involved. Let’s get back to that joy.
Guided writing activities and readings will encourage writers to explore the paths not yet taken in our works-in-progress, as well as discover new content and ways of telling. The process-based daily workshops are designed for writers of all levels of skill and experience, and will emphasize generating work through creative practice and study of literary models. We will celebrate the work on the page with participant readings and lively conversation over lovingly prepared meals.
