In partnership with the Newberry Library, StoryStudio Chicago is proud to present a new author series, featuring your favorite writers. This Writers on Writing Series, hosted at the Newberry Library, in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, aims to bring critically acclaimed, award-winning, and multi-book authors to Chicago for an evening of free programming.

Curated by StoryStudio’s Artistic Director Rebecca Makkai, Writers on Writing is meant to dive deeper than the typical author talk, which might focus only on the writer’s most recent publication. Instead, Writers on Writing conversations will discuss the real work and artistry of writing, covering the evolution of each writer’s entire career and writing process.

Unlike some of our other programs where we bring in well-known authors to teach writing, the Writers on Writing Series is as much for readers as it is for writers. The conversation will cover topics outside the craft of writing, including their obsessions, hot takes, and inspirations. The series will also feature one of Chicago’s prominent local authors sitting down with the author and asking them questions, some of their own and of course some from the audience.

Newberry Library Vice President for Public Engagement Vince Firpo comments: “The Newberry is thrilled to work with StoryStudio and Rebecca Makkai on this new series. Programs on literature and writing are always a draw for Newberry audiences, and partnering with another Chicago institution will help us invite a diverse roster of renowned writers to the library. Writers on Writing is a perfect way to attract new audiences while providing the first-rate programming that longtime attendees have come to expect from us.”

For our 2026-27 series, we’re thrilled to announce our lineup.

The following morning after each Newberry Library event, StoryStudio is excited to host a Breakfast and Book Club gathering! This gathering is much smaller than the Newberry event — around 20 people — and its purpose is narrowed to one book. Coffee and breakfast treats will be served, and then the guest author will sit and chat about one particular book of theirs with the attendees. This is a rare opportunity to ask questions about an award winning book directly to the author in an intimate and cozy setting.

Attendance is free with registration, though we ask for a suggested donation to help us continue offering these programs in the future.

Previous series have been recorded for you to watch after each event. Please see below for porgrams featuring writers like Meg Wolitzer, Hanif Abdurraqib, Jericho Brown, Lauren Groff, and Susan Choi.
