PUBLICATIONS
A crucial part of building a writing community is showcasing the creative work of writers in that community. We are proud to offer several free online publications, including the Chicago Review of Books, the literary journal Arcturus, and the youth literary journal Stella Nova (for and by StoryStudio youth writers). Please read more below about each publication (including information on how to pitch and submit).
The Chicago Review of Books is a publication of StoryStudio Chicago dedicated to making the literary conversation more inclusive by covering diverse genres, presses, voices, and mediums; shining a light on Chicago’s literary scene; and serving as a forum for literature in the Midwest.
The Chicago Review of Books publishes book reviews, interviews, book lists, essays on Chicago and culture, and special features, like Interview with an Editor and Reading Your Resistance.
Founded in 2016, the Chicago Review of Books is and has always been free to read.
The sister publication of the Chicago Review of Books, Arcturus is an online literary journal of new perspectives in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid genres.
The name Arcturus comes from the star that opened the 1933 “Century of Progress” World’s Fair in Chicago.
There are no restrictions on the content Arcturus publishes, except that they’re passionate about publishing new perspectives — new ideas, new voices, new worlds, new challenges, new ways of seeing — a theme that can take an infinite number of shapes, including speculative fiction, flash fiction, experimental poetry, political essays, narrative reportage, and virtually everything else.
Created specifically for the young writers who participate in StoryStudio Chicago programming, Stella Nova is a home for the creative writing of the youngest scribes in our community. The journal showcases the work of young writers who have participated in any of our summer camps, youth creative writing classes, or Chicago Stories Project programs.
