ABOUT US
StoryStudio Chicago is a nonprofit literary arts organization focused on building a writing community.
We offer more than 200 online and in-person creative writing classes and events each year, which include everything from single-session classes focused on one aspect of craft to multi-session weekly classes to full year-long programs.
We nurture writers of all ages and all skill levels and our programming covers all genres, from short stories and novels, to creative nonfiction like memoirs and essays, to poetry, screenwriting, satire, and just about anything you can imagine.
Our Story Began In 2003 . . .
. . . when our founder, Jill Pollack, decided that she wanted to spend more time in the company of other writers and focus on her fiction. While teaching at another institution, Jill got the idea for StoryStudio and opened the doors in 2003 with just four students.
In 2007, we moved to our current home, a unique loft space in the vibrant business corridor on North Ravenswood Avenue.
Today, StoryStudio . . .
. . . now operates as a 501c3 public charity through our parent organization Stories Matter Foundation, which was established in 2015 by StoryStudio Founder Jill Pollack. Stories Matter Foundation now includes StoryStudio Chicago, the Chicago Review of Books, the Chicago Stories Project, and a variety of ongoing events, festivals, and initiatives. StoryStudio welcomes more than 1,500 writers each year.

From talented, published teaching authors, to dedicated and serious writing students, to volunteer teams and work/study positions, there’s a place for everyone at the Studio. At StoryStudio, we believe in the power of story, and that stories matter. We strive to teach the art, craft, and business of writing in a positive, open, and encouraging setting where students can discover their unique voices. Our Mission
At StoryStudio Chicago, we help writers hone their craft, express their creativity, and communicate with confidence. Our mission is simple: We build communities of storytellers trained to question, explore, celebrate, and change their worlds using the power of story.
With classes covering a wide variety of topics, genres, and levels, there is truly something for everyone at StoryStudio. No matter the class you choose, you’ll find stimulating discussion, a creative space where your writing life can flourish, and committed and talented instructors who bring their expertise and experience as working writers to the classroom.
